Welcome to 공부하자

This web site is designed to aid in the acquisition of Korean vocabulary and grammar. This site is for foreigners who are studying the Korean language. Anyone can create an account and comment or edit vocabulary words and grammar points on the site. Through tagging, it can be used to supplement any book or course. For example, if a grammar point occurs in Yonsei KLI's third book, it can be marked yonsei-3. Users can easily mark and find supplemental information regarding their books or courses. Check out the 단어 section.

A very easy way to improve one's Korean vocabulary through studying Hanja. By no means do you need to memorize the characters themselves. 60% of Korean words are derived from Chinese and the characters are almost always pronounced the same way in every Korean word that they appear in, so knowing the sound should be enough to guess the meaning of words that you have never heard. As an aid, when viewing vocabulary that contains Hanja, the characters' definitions are displayed.

Laziness

Laziness is my one big vice. In the past I was against my own laziness, but now I indulge it. That's why it's taken me so long to start using this site, and also why this blog entry is so short. Anyway, let's see what I can learn: )

Sogang University's Online Korean Course

서강대's online course has reading, listening and tests for all levels. Great for review!

Handbook of Korean Vocabulary

This book made me realize that learning Chinese characters would greatly enhance my ability to acquire Korean vocabulary. I like to think of it as a portable kongbuhaja.com. Highly recommended.

공부하자 launched

I have been putting off the launch of this site for almost a month now. Hopefully the decision to get it out there, even if it doesn't have all of the features that I wanted it to have, will be worth it. I'll be adding more in the coming months. Suggestions are welcome. My current plans include:

  • Integrating a parser that I wrote with Steve H. and Lu D that can utilize the community-edited vocabulary and grammar points.
  • Adding a way of tracking which vocabulary and grammar points you have acquired
  • A simple flashcard application
